There is no reason not to pay respect to Mr Lee Kuan Yew

CR: Facebook

This week started out gloomy, as we have to send of Singapore's founding father, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. Everyone knows it was coming when the announcement of his condition has worsened, but everyone grabs the little faith, hope and prayers that would cheer him on while he was battling with his illness. I am a 90's baby, so everything was pretty much settled before I was born. We have clean water, house and even many neighborhood schools; but everything are established because of one man, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew.

There is no reason not to pay your respect to Mr. Lee Kuan Yew; he has transformed Singapore from a 3rd class, all the way to the 1st. If there wasn't him, we might still be living in the rundown villages, having to walk miles just to head to school or work.

We complained about the MRT being faulty every now and then, but could you imagine if there isn't MRT available? I was one of the blessed souls when the circle line was out, as my parents worked in Paya Lebar, and we lived in Admiralty station. It has shortens my travelling time almost half an hour.

We complained about having ERP and COE if we want to own a car, which has only a life span of 10 years. But could you imagine, if everyone owns a car, and there is massive traffic jam that you could only reach your workplace after 2 hours or even worst?

We complained about HDB getting smaller and more expensive. However, in 1999, 91% of our citizen could own a house. Also, government even built one-room flat for the elderly who want to live by themselves. In addition, the house bought could live up to 99 years, which I doubt anyone would really live that long, except it is passed down from your ancestors.

We complained having to study so much, especially being bilingual - Mother Tongue and English. Chinese always have this saying, "you are Chinese, yet you can't speak mandarin. What a shame" Personally, I hated English so much, there are so much verb, tense and adjective, what more having to study Mandarin. But as I grow older, I'm glad we are bilingual, as we could communicate with people of the other races and we could even use our Mother Tongue in other country and not forgetting where we came from. In addition, study is not about what you could memories, it about the process. For example, Mathematics helps in problem solving.

Many people complained that Singapore is more stressful than other countries, but I always believe in this phase," tough times don't last, but tough people do." Indeed, Singapore is a stressful country, especially when we started studying; our parents often compare results of the child with their friends. A stressful country as we work almost 12hours a day, wanting to improved on our proposal to be the best or prefect job.

Singapore is a stressful country, but I believe it is because we are still growing, even if we are the 1st world country now, doesn't mean we could stop there, the future are still highly dependent on us. Because we are just a small dot, we still have many areas we have to improve in.

We are the one that Mr. Lee Kuan Yew would like to pass his "child" to; we are the one that could make him proud as we grow together and united as one. Together we preserve and battle in this competitive society till we success. Just take a look at your surrounding, every bites and pieces are implemented thanks to Mr. Lee Kuan Yew; the bright streetlights, low corruption, clean drinking water even from the tap, the green Singapore, and lastly, the first world country.

When we are studying Social Studies, my teacher would say she will cry 3days if Mr. Lee passed away, at that point I feel it’s a bit too drama. But as I learnt and grow, I believe that we all need to thank him from the deepest of our heart.

Thank you Mr. Lee for everything you have done, thank you from giving up being a lawyer and step out to be Singapore's Prime Minister. Thank you for thinking how to improve Singapore, from the day where you cried on national TV - when Singapore has to be independent. Thank you.

My deepest condolences for Prime Minister Mr. Lee Hsien Loong and your family.
